The dried, ground berries of the sumac bush, which is native to the Middle East. Ground sumac has a tangy, lemony, flavor and is widely used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. Best sprinkled over foods before serving, but also used in dry rubs, marinades, and dressings.
